Latin American Calculators in Mathematics Education Project: Placem

چکیده

The Latin American Calculators in Mathematics Education Project (PLACEM) is experimenting with the use of calculators in mathematics teaching in seven Latin American countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Mexico and Venezuela. PLACEM has received calculators and some financial support from Texas Instruments. There has been only minor resistance to calculator use, and initial results from the projects indicate changes in teacher perceptions on the nature of mathematics. Materials are being developed, teacher workshops held, and research projects initiated. Most countries experienced difficulty with importing the donated calculators, and there is an emerging demand for calculators.

The Importance of Being Accessible: the Graphics Calculator in Mathematics Education*

The first decade of the availability of graphics calculators in secondary schools has just concluded, although evidence for this is easier to find in some countries and schools than in others, since there are gross socio-economic differences in both cases. It is now almost the end of the second decade since the invention of microcomputers and their appearance in mathematics educational settings...

The role of technology when teaching mathematics

The availability of technology has changed enormously during the last 20-30 years. From the large and clumsy desk calculators of the 1970’s over to the so called functional calculators in the 1980’s and during the last 10-15 years we have got graphing calculators as well as symbolic calculators. There are also calculators which include software for geometrical constructions on the market today....

The Effects of Using Graphic Calculators in Teaching and Learning of Mathematics

Although graphic calculators have been developed in mathematics education for nearly two decades, research on the technology’s use is not robust. Its use in secondary schools (for example, in Great Britain, France, Sweden, New Zealand, Netherlands, and United States) is not well understood, universally accepted, nor well-documented. In Malaysia, research on the usage of graphic calculators is s...
